Corfu Town

Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is a principal port and the largest town in the Ionian Islands. It is built between two Venetian castles, having its own unique atmosphere. It is a thriving mass of shops and businesses, set amongst a captivating and charming assortment of elegant buildings, churches, imposing fortresses and narrow alleyways leading to hidden squares. The tall buildings with the 'volta' (arches), the 'cantounia' (narrow flagstoned streets), the 'mouragia' (sea-walls) are showing all a clear Italian influence.

One of the most beautiful walks in the town is around the Esplanade (Spianada Square), one of the biggest squares in Europe, which is the hub of the Corfiot's life. Here you can walk around or sit in one of the many cafe bars underneath the arches of the 'Liston', a name probably derived from a similar promenade in Venice. Liston was built during the imperial French occupation and is reminiscent of the larger 'Arcades' of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris.

The majority of Corfu's attractions have historical or cultural significance, while others offer thrills and excitement.

In the northwest of Corfu are situated the Diapontia Islands - Othonoi, Erikousa, Mathraki, a distance of 11, 8 and 4 nautical miles accordingly, in a total area of 21,6 square km. They were named because of the fact that they're situated in the middle of two seas, both the Ionian and the Adriatic sea.

They have gorgeous landscapes with plenty of vegetation, one or two cafés, and a few simple Corfu hotels and restaurants in each islet. The few people who live there make their living mainly from fishing and olive oil.The beaches are great with clear shallow waters and are very welcome to visitors of all ages.

Your Local Connection

Welcome to Corfu!

Corfu hotels team Meet your local connection in Corfu, Vasso, Effie, Sandra & the team of Corfu Sunspots! We are very proud to be part of whl.travel and to join a network of people that are concerned with the needs of local communities and the local environment to avoid the destruction of beautiful destinations like ours by mass tourism. In Corfu, we are active in promoting responsible tourism in our destination and have implemented a "Go Green" campaign with some accommodations that our company is managing on behalf of the owners.
