The Varkarola

Place: Paleokastritsa
The Varkarola Festival of Corfu
The Corfiot locals celebrate every year the mirakle of Saint Spyriodon as according to the local belief, the saint saved the island from a Turkish siege on 11th of August 1716.
The Vakarola takes place the closest Saturday to August 11th. Years ago it was held in Corfu Town, in the bay of Garitsa, but now in the beautiful bay of Paleokastritsa. The Corfiots celebrate the miracle with an impressive and really moving representation of the nautical fight - with singing choirs in boats, and bands playing traditional music.
At the end of the Varkarola, a boat is set on fire and fireworks explode to commemorate the burning of the Turkish naval during the 17th century siege.
